Thanks Vaishali and Catherine for your responses on hypernatremia in
infants. Also I want to apologize to Dr. Nancy Wight for spelling your name
incorrectly. (I was tired and not feeling well)
We had a baby at only 2 days of age admitted to the Special Care Nursery
with a diagnosis of dehydration and hypernatremia. The neo said it had to be
dehydration because the sodium level was high. I don't recall all the issues
in this case but the baby was not a good nurser and there was probably too
much mother/baby separation. But at 2 days what would make a baby's sodium
level rise? They should have enough reserve from birth to hold them for at least
2 days if not more.
I understand that a baby with classic signs and symptoms of dehydration
would have a high sodium level but at such an early age could there be something
else going on?
Thanks again.
