Hi from sunny warm SFL, still looking at the effects of Wilma, but at long
last have lights, and a hot water....Also had fun reading the past two weeks
postings. During the storm had to battle several nurses who really didn't
want to press the need to breastfeed to Moms who hadn't planned on it or were
going to do "both". When 4 counties have no electricity it seems that
Emergency Planning should address it in their announcements of the importance to
breastfeed to protect babies; but not one word and I called and asked one of the
TV and radio stations to announce it. Will all the LCs and interested
parties send letters to Governor Bush and ask him to include this in future
disaster planning for the State of Florida and perhaps it might get some notice and
if we can get one state to address this important health issue perhaps other
states will follow suit.
Now on to the initial reason why I am posting....The slings from cover gowns
sounds like a real neat idea, BUT...check with risk management, because if
you are using something for its unintended original usage (which we all have
done) and something unforeseen occurs the liability is unbelievable. We
learned this years ago when making Mayan style wraps on the night shift from
drawsheets and we had to stop. If a baby were to fall out we were to be held
liable no uncertain terms. Better to have a sling project, to have available for
purchase a sling for each parent for each baby and teach them correct use,
if the parents desire to use it then its available to them. Its like giving
out carseats the risks are enormous. Just a word of caution in the day of
litigation.
