Asking the toddler to open big and tipping their head back more can make
breastfeeding a child with a gap more comfortable. When the labial
frenulum is thick and tight, the lip can't always keep a seal on the
breast, and the child compensates by sealing around the gums, which
causes that suction through the gap effect. Having the lip come at more
of an angle helps it seal to the breast when the labial frenulum is
tight. Do the same things we'd do with an infant to ensure an
asymmetrical latch- slide the child toward the opposite side, and wrap
his/her hips around mom.
It's easy enough to snip this frenulum, and teeth move together rather
rapidly once it's gone.
