My son Jason, was in the minus 15th percentile for most of his young years.
The MDs made us subject him to bone age xrays, blood tests, scans , etc all
before the scrutiny of many experts and medical students who were studying the
numbers like it would reveal the lottery numbers. Everything came back normal
and they came to the conclusion that " you can't breed chiwawas and get
Great Danes". That is the actual quote from the Pediatric Edocrinologist. My
husband is 5ft 5, I am 5 ft 3, the grandparents were about that size. He
finally made it back onto the growth charts at age 12. He was always one of the
smallest in his class ( there were 2 other boys the same size). He made up for
the lack of size by being adventuresome-bungee jumping, paragliding, surfing
etc. He is now in the US Army and is jumping out of perfectly good airplanes
and is one of the first to go into a battle zone anywhere in the world on a 2
hr notice. I wish I could see those peds now who actually told me that they
could report me to Child Protective services if I didn't agree to the medical
tests. Jason was always healthy-has never had an ear infection or upper
respiratory illness in his life. He was healthy, but happened to be on the wrong
end of the growth chart. I think they need to teach MDs to look at the entire
picture, not just a tiny part.
