Hi Lactnetters:
An expectant Mother with Paresis (a condition in which one is born with no
limbs - no arms and no legs) is planning to deliver any time, at the hospital in
which I work, and very much desires to exclusively breastfeed her baby.
Obviously, breastfeeding is a wonderful choice for any Mother with a disability.
But with this mom's severe disability, (no stumps to maneuver, uses mostly her
teeth), I am bit dismayed as to how we might help her to breastfeed
independently. I thought of a sling such as the Maya Wrap and even considered Velcro.
I do not have much experience with Occupational Therapy or disabilities and I
would greatly appreciate any ideas, however small.
I would like to help her to have as fulfilling an experience as possible.
Warmly,
Tina Williams, HMA, IBCLC
Phoenix Baptist Hospital and Medical Center
