In 1994, Josie, a female Bornean orangutan in Lowry Park Zoo Tampa, FL, gave
birth to her first baby, Sulango. She was raised in captivity and needed
assistance with breastfeeding. According to their press release article, the
vet staff assisted Sulango to the breast every two hours for the first few
days, and Josie managed quite well by herself after that. I use this example
in my breastfeeding classes. Even an orangutan needs help if she was bottle
fed! She went on to nurse him for over three years.
