This is a well known cultural term in Norway and some of us think the
condition is persistent and contagious. It explains the absentmindedness of
postpartum staff, for example - the ambient fog on some of our wards would
merit closing airports or at least turning on the foghorns.
In fact it describes the mother's concentration on the baby and feeding, as
one blocks out extraneous stimuli such as news broadcasts or the thundering
roar of dust collecting on bookshelves. We use it to explain why it's a
good idea to give information simply and repeatedly.
