I have this mother's permission to post. I am a tad puzzled. Baby is 11
days old, full term male. Mother is a very large woman with very large, floppy
breasts. I saw her on Day 5, post vaginal birth. Breasts were not full,
seemed floppy. Baby fussed terribly at breast and came on and off her very
sore nipples, which of course was making them more sore. I tried supplementing
with tubing at breast, which did little to improve situation. Even when I
got the best latch with baby's mouth wide open, he pulled off rapidly and
repeated same. He often pulls in his lower lip. Did not appear to have a tight
frenulum and even asked ped. to check and he agreed that that was not the
problem. Chin is recessed which takes work to bring into breast correctly. There
is so much limp, breast tissue that it is difficult to see what baby is
doing. Mother is now pumping and getting more than the initial 1/2 ounce she got
then. Is now up to approx. 2 ounces per session and is pumping every 2-3
hours. She is also taking More Milk Plus. Baby is being supplemented with
expressed milk when available or formula when not. Dad finger feeds, uses
bottle, or mom tries to keep him at breast with tube supplementation. In her
tearful call to me today, she says her "breasts are still not hard or really
feeling full." She is getting very discouraged and I am getting confused. I
asked her today to check with OB to determine if by any chace there could be
any retained placenta, though she claims there cannot be. Any ideas? What am
I missing? Thanks, Ann
