Thank you, Barbara. I have never like this term because it is generally
used in such a negative context, like, it is such a bad thing to have the
knowledge and conviction to share and help others with what we have
learned. Which isn't just opinion but based on countless hours of evidence
based research and practice, as long as the LC is keeping up with current
research and practice through text, conferences and a pipeline of
information from colleagues and belonging to ILCA, LLL and other
breastfeeding organizations.
It is not politically correct to name call any other group of people, be
it their ethnicity, field of work, religion or any other thing we can
think of, in print, in the news and in a public or private place (although
attorneys are often given some bad terms, which is also not right), so why
do writers and reporters think that our work is something to poke fun at
or criticize? And the media is always so cautious about using an incorrect
term for fear of recourse but it is one of the first places to slip in
those words when writing an article, be it negative or positive, the words
always plant that little seed of "those women are tough, nasty and pushy"
(just a few of the thoughts that would pop into someone's mind) even if
they did help the writer.
Sorry, just had to get that off of my chest.
Cheryl
