I couldn't agree more with Kathy Leeper's comments encouraging us to "plant
the seed" to stay at home with a nursling.
I had a six-month maternity leave -- and thought that would be all the time
in the world when I was on the pregnancy end of it. But a high-needs
infant, and plain ol' motherhood, made that six months seem like a ticking
time bomb. I became more and more anxious as Return Date approached.
Finally, my dear husband simply said, "Why don't you just stay home?"
Well, the skies parted, the chorus sang, and the heavenly rays beamed down
upon me.
There is a lovely book entitled "Reinventing Ourselves After Motherhood:
How Former Career Women Refocus Their Personal and Professional Lives After
the Birth of a Child" by Susan Lewis. The author interviewed dozens of
women (disclaimer: I was one) about their personal struggles once they
discover their long-held "plan" to continue a well-honed career while being
a new mother is often impossible. .
We go through a (torturous) thought process before we quit. We go through a
(torturous) thought process when circumstances mean quitting is not an
option. But often the triggering even for that self-examination is that
simple, planted seed Kathy describes. Many of us (as IBCLCs) are past this
part of our lives -- but we work everyday with women who are in the thick of
it. I commend this book for your library
