I wanted to comment on the film first attachment. I show it to all of the childbirth classes. I come in to every child birth class and introduce breastfeeding. That way I can meet most couples even if they didn't sign up for the breastfeeding class. It has been very successful in letting them know what a family birth center care is all about. I emphasise skin to skin. I want them to know about pain control and the effects it can have on breastfeeding. We have been delaying bath until after the first feed. It has made a big difference in our babies going to breast.
I still have some that take awhile to get it but out of 97 babies they are at least leaving our unit breastfeeding. I try to encourage them to stay another day to get more practice and assistance. They know that they can come back to see me and that I will follow up with them after discharge.
It has been working well. We had 46% breastfeeding in 2002 and we are 65-85% now. It took alot to turn our staff around but they are seeing the progress. I went on to much but wanted to let others know that I feel the film has had a very good impact at our hospital.
