I believe Betsy was referring to Dr. Margaret McLaren, who also gave a talk
on Breastfeeding and Maternal Methadone or Substance Abuse: Promoting health
and Recovery for ACTLC, Connecticut's local ILCA affiliate. Dr. McLaren is
Director of Well Newborn Services & PROkids Intervention Program at
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Hartford, Connecticut. She just was named a
Harris Mid-Career Fellow by Leaders for the 21st Century, a Program for fellows
at Zero to Three. In response to the need for services for newborns affected
by maternal substance use and their caregivers, she founded PROkids
(Promoting Resilience and Optimal development) within the Primary Care Center in
1991. This intervention combines a medical home with family development and home
visitation. Margaret’s major interests are enhancement of infant mental
health and attachment in high-risk mother-infant dyads. As part of this
intervention, Dr. McLaren promotes breastfeeding and skin to skin contact when
possible. For more information, please check:
