I am NO MAIL but I have re-set to get mail temporarily for this question.
A colleague is counselling a mother 8 weeks post-partum, who has
returned to the maternity unit as an outpatient for a check, because
her episiotomy is not healing well.
The doctor has told her that it will not heal properly until she
stops breastfeeding.
(I know...I know......)
I need some idea of where this notion has begun, and if there is any
evidence, possibly misinterpreted, that breastfeeding slows down the
normal healing process in a healthy mother.
We are suggesting the mother asks the doctor for the references that
support his assertion, of course. I have checked archives here to no
avail.
It would be rather fun for the mother to say to the doctor, ' I
checked this out, Doc, and I think you have slightly misunderstood
the 1997 paper from Bumpstead and Bampford, who found their sample
of 3000 breastfeeding mothers actually healed *more quickly*, the
longer they breastfed.....'
