I have permission to share this e-mail from the sender who is a member of my
community and connected with this daycare. She and I are quite concerned
about what this might do to mothers who use the daycare and are breastfeeding.
Does anyone have a list of articles on this topic? Reformatting my hard
drive and backing up improperly deprived me of many of my saved studies.
"Because the daycare receives Army funding, it is required to participate in
the USDA food program for the children. Until recently, the food program
applied to children 1 year and older, and parents of infants provided food
(formula, breastmilk, and baby food) for their children up to twelve months. (the
Center has traditionally been very supportive of nursing mothers) New
regulations require that infants also be included in the food program and the Center
is being required to provide free liquid formula for all infants up to 12
months. My question for you is this: does offering free formula discourage
mothers from continuing to nurse? My instincts say yes, but I am looking for
medical studies that could back this claim up."
Can anyone help? I have suggested she talk to the local WIC bfg counselors
and put up posters and leaveinformation, leaflets - some of which I can give
to her - so mothers are informed of the advantages of breastfeeding.
