Oh Jessica, I soo relate.

My theory on breastfeeding is that it's a robust process. If only one or 
maybe 2 things are wrong, mom and baby can often compensate, but if lots 
of obstacles exist, then they need us. That's why we almost never see 
"simple latch" issues in private practice (when I do, I feel like I'm in 
heaven).

I also saw a mom with hypoplasia this week. Her case is not severe, but 
we definately had to break out the artificial stuff. Her mom was a LLL 
mom and was sitting right there with her, and it really hurt to have to 
explain that we need to feed her little one right away, with whatever we 
could get our hands on while we see how much milk she can make. In that 
case, I tend to talk about the value of even a little bit of mother's 
milk for it's immunologic stimulation and trophic functions. I also tell 
them about human milk banks.
