I totally agree with both Mary and Marsha's posts. I think our energy and
emphasis to parents and caretakers should be on not the weight loss but no
separation, skin to skin, and learning babies cues.
I really would prefer not to have babies weighed again until they are 6
weeks old or so. I would rather that parents and caretakers look at the baby to
determine if there is a problem.
How do we get parents to keep their babies with them?
The other point that both Mary and Marsha pointed out is that parents get
worried because the staff make the problem. They tell the parents that it is
"time to feed the baby" and the baby is totally uninterested at that time.
When the staff person comes back to the room and asked how did the baby feed
and the parents state the baby is still sleeping, they are made to feel
terrible that they did not feed the baby and this is when supplementing gets started.
I keep trying to teach the staff and parents to "look at the big picture, at
least 24 hours" not the small picture like 3 hours. Then look at the baby.
SIGH!
Off the soap box.
