Ann,
Do you have access to Medela's glass pump flanges? It's rare that mom's need
them but I currently have 2 moms who were experiencing pain with pumping
(proper suction level) even with the xl size (30 mm) flanges so tried the glass
ones and are using them with great success now as far as no pain and increase in
supply for one, able to maintain while working for the other. One mom had
obvious nipple strangulation from pump while the other has large nipples that
looked like they fit well with 30 mm flanges, but she found that only the glass
was comfortable. Most women have a large portion of breast pulled into the
flange so maybe your mom with bleeding nipples would then kind of bypass having
flange pull her nipples at all.
