We all know sampling works. Since Traditional Medicinals has been giving
out samples of it's mother's milk tea to lactation consultants for their
clients, their sales have soared. This is a fairly benign product, and I
judiciously give out the samples to clients who are having low milk
supply issues despite doing pumping, at breast supplementing, and seeing
our wonderful local breastfeeding medicine doc for treatment of their
underlying isse; or to moms who are continually worried about their
normal milk supply. Some swear it's helpful, others are not impressed.
Sometimes even a placebo is valuable in medical care, if we don't have a
better treatment.
We do need to be cognizant of the message that handing out samples
projects. "You need this" "Breastfeeding does not work all on it's own"
and save the samples for the mothers who have a high probability of
benefit from the product for example lansinoh or gel pads for moms who
already have cracked nipples (AFTER we fix the latch and start working
on the sucking if needed).
