I'd like to add my voice in support of Lara's post, in favor of the mother
with symptoms of pain and morning stiffness seeing a rheumatologist.
Rheumatological disorders are complex, and can be life-threatening, and in
fact breastfeeding seems to exacerbate them in a good number of women. It
is not unusual for them to have their debut in the first months post partum.
This mother deserves the benefit of a complete consultation so she can find
out whether she is affected by such a disorder, and then weigh her options
with someone knowledgeable about breastfeeding and rheumatologic disorders.
She shouldn't be treating herself with well-intentioned advice from people
who have had similar experiences until serious pathology has been
convincingly ruled out.
