I would hazard a guess that we need some basic reserach and I'm not sure how 
you can control for all the confounding factors to find out how much babies 
really lose.
Factors: hospital vs home birth;
mom with IV vs no IV;
separation vs non separation;
BF vs formula fed;
# of times and amounts fed in first 24/48 hours;
gestational age of baby;
multiparity of mother.
And that's all I can think of off the top of my head! I'm sure there are 
more!
The important factor that everyone misses and Nils Bergman focuses on is 
that mother and baby should NOT be separated. I've mentioned my experiences 
before with 24 hour discharges.  Baby seen in next 24 hours and again on day 
4.  I expected slight weight loss on day 2 and baby at birthweight or beyond 
on day 4.  This applied across the board, breast or bottle.  And came to be 
what I expected as normal.  Would be neat if someone could do a study!  Pat 
in SNJ  (and that's my 2 for today :-) I'm off to stitch! two conventions 
two weekends in a row has tired me out.)
