Honorable Frances Fredericks:
I strongly urge you to reject the House Bill 527 and SUPPORT THE SENATE BILL
(S.B. 2419). I am a professional lactation consultant and have been working
with breastfeeding mothers for over 20 years. The added wording "providing
there is appropriate discretion used" (to address the issue of breastfeeding
wherever a mother is authorized to be) at first sounds like a reasonable
phrase to add. However, this would leave the statute wide open for all sorts
of interpretations. Some folks mind their own business and others are nosy
and prudish. I promise you if this "discretion" wording is left in, it will
be used to harass and even arrest and prosecute nursing mothers.
Breastfeeding rates are woefully low in Mississippi and mothers need to be
enthusiastically encouraged to breastfeed, as our American Academy of
Pediatrics says to do. All mothers I have worked with were concerned about
breastfeeding in a comfortable and modest way. Therefore, I can see no way
that you would have a problem with too much exposure, if that is the worry.
What you will have is more mothers feeling that breastfeeding is a
worthwhile thing to do, which it is.
