School psychologists (in my experience as a teacher of special needs
children...I work daily with school psychologists) don't do as much
counseling and therapy as private practice psychologists. Their primary job
(in my district) is to conduct cognitive assessments (IQ tests) on children
as part of determining the presence or absence of an educational disability.
Sometimes these children are violent or otherwise disturbed and it would not
be appropriate to have one's own child present in a testing situation.
