I have worked with several dietetic interns and what I wanted them to
remember is to always look at the entire picture--not just the diet, not just the
calories, not just the weight. Look at family dynamics, overall health of mom
and baby, know and utilize your breastfeeding knowledge, review, review and
review. No one ever knows it all. Recognize your limitations and when you are
out of your area of expertise. Call in your team players. Also know where
your team players are--peer counselors, LLL leaders, maternity care
coordinators, food bank, Salvation Army, etc. Keep up to date with the community
resources. Attend LLL meetings and familiarize yourself with those resources and
leaders. LLL is a wealth of information, especially when you are not familiar
with the culture or language of a mother that you are working with. Be a member
of the professional organizations, spend some time each month reading journal
articles --especially now that is easy on the Internet so you are up to date
and current.
