June,
The amount of milk your NICU mom should be expressing is going to depend on
how often she is breastfeeding/pumping, and what type of pump that she is
using when she is pumping. It is also going to depend on when she started
pumping/breastfeeding.
Research tells us that by day 10-14, a mother who is exclusively pumping
should be producing 750-1000 ml to have an ideal milk supply. Mom should be
stimulating her breast at least 8 times/24hrs with either effective breatfeeding
(which I doubt the baby is doing) or double pumping with a hospital grade pump.
To optimize her potential, be sure that she is double pumping at least
8x/24hrs with hospital grade pump for 15-20 minutes or 2 minutes after her milk stops
dripping, whichever is longer.
Hope this helps,
Chris Smith, RN, IBCLC, RLC
