I am looking for a nice easy latch problem. Just joking. I am looking for
a consultation that is not a train wreck, emotionally draining, etc. Maybe
it was something in the water this week!
I had a consult two days ago that went as follows:
Couple had planned a home birth, mother went to a routine check of something
in hospital after being constipated for five days and found out she is at 10
and baby is on way out. She had no idea, and was shocked to realize not
only did she not have time to go home for the birth, she couldn't even make
it to the next room.

I saw her on day 2 1/2 - She had gone straight home, and baby had been at
breast straight, crying and never settling.
Parents are Vegans- she works with animal therapy- don't use disposable
diapers, no packaged or processed foods, the whole nine yards.
I weigh baby who had lost about 12% by that point.
Mom hesitantly opens up- and guess what...
SEVERE lack of glandular tissue. Not a drop of milk.
a. My heart broke to have to discuss with her what this meant.
be. That baby needed to be fed- NOW!

Imagine trying to tell these people to go buy Similar-
I was as good a rep as any- How much $ has gone into research to make it as
close to human milk as possible, how lucky we are that it exists, how babies
can thrive on it, etc.
Isn't it ironic what positions we find ourselves in as LC's?
This was 10 times more of a shock to this couple based on their general
attitudes towards processed foods, etc.
I am just curious if anyone else has found themselves in a similar situation
and what tactics you have used to break this kind of news- the situation
with breasts, while not wanting to kill the resolve to give it a try through
pumping, galactologues, etc. but not wanting to mislead her into thinking
that this is a minor issue and she should be flowing with milk any day.
We of course fed baby at the breast because a bottle was totally taboo for
this mom.
I just came home so heartbroken about how someone's hopes and dreams can
sway so far from the reality of the situation. She was thrown a curveball
in the birth as well as breastfeeding.
