The 37 year old mother of a 7 month old has been told she can't have her next mammogram until "6 weeks after weaning", which they'd like to be soon. Her own mother had premenopausal breast cancer, so they've been watching her carefully.

We've gone over the fact that mammograms can be done on nursing mothers but are generally not as good quality, that continued nursing is one of the few things she can do to protect herself, that "6 weeks after weaning" implies a poor understanding of how weaning happens, that weaning is a gray area that can extend for years, and that it's unlikely that they need total involution. Does anyone have more info they can give her before she goes back to talk to her caregivers?

She may face a premature weaning or near-total weaning in the next few months anyway, to allow for some particularly unusual fertility treatments; we're trying to figure out whether the mammogram piece needs to be considered at all in putting her particular puzzle pieces together.
