Greetings- I am a hospital based lactation conultant, and we were recently informed that one of the insurance carriers we work with will reimburse for an electric breast pump if the mother has a prescription signed by her physician. We have a medical supply store who sells pumps, so we have been asking the physicians when they do discharge rounding to sign the prescription so the mom can go down to the store and get a breastpump. At first this was not a problem, but now almost all the OB physicians are refusing to sign the Rx because it "increases insurance costs and ultimately comes out of our pocket." The good news is that the pediatricians will sign the Rx, so we are starting to take the prescription to them...
However, I would love to get my hands on a good article as to how moms who have an electric pump at work ultimately SAVE money for the insurance company due to less illness in the baby, less lost work time, etc. I would like to look at this as an opportunity to educate. Does anyone have an article like this that you could recommend? Thank you so much! Linda
