I should not blame the pediatrician. The truth is, likely that is the
experience of what is seen in the practice. No one works hard at breastfeeding.
Or maybe they do, but it just goes unnoticed. Or maybe they would if they
received some encouragement and proper care. Instead, it never occurs to the
pediatrician that anyone would bother to work so hard to be sure to give her
baby a normal start. Likely very few in his practice do at all. Can't blame a
doctor for being clueless about normal newborn babies and mothering since it
is hardly what they are taught or see.
Ah, but I do blame any physician who can't at least have the good common
sense to be kind and understanding. I think if you are anything other than a
surgeon (as in your patients are rarely awake to talk to) you should have some
skills in human communication and anyone working with mothers and babies
should have extra understanding about the importance of the experience of
breastfeeding and caring for a baby.
I feel so sorry for the mothers and babies who just want support and care
doing what is normal. When something that is normal is not working properly,
we seek medical care or advice or help. If possible, we want our bodies and
our babies bodies to be doing what is normal. Doesn't seem to much to ask
for. After all, if a man goes to the doctor and is concerned because his
anatomy isn't functioning properly, all the proper tests will be ordered without
him begging for them and they have lovely little pills to make it all better.
Shame the anatomy of the woman's body and the function of her baby doesn't
get at the very least the same treatment....all the tests run without begging
and treatment as appropriate--again without begging or trying to prove it is
appropriate treatment.
Take care,
