This is in regards to Renee Drake's posting. I went to webpage and read the
article.
I do admit that some of the author's observations are true. I work at the
this facility and we strive to improve the nursing care on a day to day basis.
I also admit that we need to work minute to minute sometimes to get the
babies to the breast after delivery and currently we are taking to task the LandD
nurses who rush the process of skin to skin. When babies are brought to the
transition nursery we request if NSVD babies where given an opportunity to
breastfeed or do skin to skin, our numbers are poor. Yes, we have a 60% cesarean
rate, due to repeats and repeats from the Catholic Hospital which doesn't do
tubal ligations. We also have a high CS on demand from our international
population and currently there is a VBAC policy. This doesn't defend the failure to
allow BF after a vaginal delivery. Wait til they see what we have in store for
the hospital after ILCA.
I am copying Mr. Biddulph's article and will bring it to the attention of the
Nursing Managers so they can see what care that is inattentive to the
patient's desire can cause as "trickle down".
I wish the physician who did the delivery can realize how he affected the
family's delivery. Occasionally I will hear MDs speak of situations and ask them
to advise DONA if they feel any one individual acted in an inappropriate
manner.
We are geared to patient satisfaction at South Miami and often even those of
us who promote Birth As a Normal Event find us facing situations that are out
of our control.
I am glad to see that the family appreciates the joy of a healthy baby and
hope they can go forward and make the most of the rest of their parenting
experience.
Thanks Renee for bringing the article to our attention, so I can use it for a
positive tool to make change in a place that be a very special place to
deliver your baby.
This is why it is essential for women to advocate throughout their
pregnancies that what they desire is very important ...say it over and over again to all
the associates in a practice, because the one who delivers you might not be
the guy you usually use.
I told this to my daughters and I repeatedly reminded their docs as I dealt
with them on day to day basis. Currently we are waiting for next baby girl any
day now to be delivered at SMH. She waited for Grammie to get home from
Chicagoland, where she learned more stuff to get the message across.
Unfortuanately many of our patients really don't request anything more than their
epidurals and "suites."
And they said Chicago was hot and muggy....us Florida girls thought it was
like spring.
Lovingly,
Leanne Jewell RNC, IBCLC, LCCE, FACCE
