About 10 + years ago I had student nurses in a hospital in MI with a 75%
epidural rate. However, the babies didn't have trouble BF! The big BUT -
mothers and babies were not separated after birth, mother didn't usually
leave recovery room until first feed had happened. Babies went briefly to
nursery for bath, drops, shots etc and back to mom. Rooming in was REALLY
rooming in - not extended visits.
Beisdes the epidural rates/medications I think we need to look at separation
of mother and infant. I think separation may be the main issue! Pat in
SNJ, who has seen enough epiduralized babies to last me a lifetime.
