Mothers of twins have special issues when nursing out in public. Nursing
fashions that are designed to open over the breast when the fabric is pulled
to one side don't work well when two babies want to latch on. At least one
gets a mouthful of fabric. And with two little toddlers anxiously lifting
mom's sweater in search of a snack or some comfort it is hard to be
discreet. A suggestion I learned from one twin mother has proved very
useful for many others. Take an old T-shirt or turtle neck shirt and cut
two big holes over the breast areas. Tuck this shirt inside the skirt or
pants the mother is wearing. Then wear a second top, either a loose blouse
or sweater, on top of the first. When the baby or babies want to nurse,
mom's midriff is well covered. Nothing much shows - not the inevitable
tummy flab or skin around the breast.

This idea is especially useful in keeping mom from freezing her middle while
nursing in cold-weather Wisconsin. It's also a great boon for mothers of
twins nursing in bed at night. Just use a T-shirt with the two holes cut in
it as the under-layer beneath a pair of pajamas.

This two-layer idea works fine for mothers of just one baby, too. It
doesn't call for covering up with blankets or wraps, doesn't call attention
to the fact that mother is nursing, and helps mothers feel they are not
exposing lots of skin to the crowd at the mall.
