Kathy Leeper mentions a syringe and tube at breast for this baby. That's
the only way the one baby I saw with a soft plate cleft was able to take
milk at breast. There is not enough negative pressure for milk removal
from an SNS or Lact aid, and mom will need to pump, because the baby
will basically be taking the milk from the syringe that is actively
squirted through the tube.
There is merit in doing this, it can help normalize tongue function,
spread the hard palate properly, help baby coordinate swallowing and
breathing better than with a Haberman feeder, and make breastfeeding
easier if the cleft is repaired.
I do generally use Haberman feeders for babies with clefts, I like them
far better than the squeeze bottles that don't stimulate tongue movements.
