Dear Lactnets,
I have looking and learning from LacNet for some time now and can't
thank some of you enough for the information and quick response to my
questions and concerns. I am a hospital based RN, my road to get here
has been long and at times painful. We have changed administrations and
I had to leave and come back to get here. My moms is what I owe my
success. They were the ones that were demanding that they bring me back.
I am the only LC, two other nurses went to the CLC course with me and
are now CLC's which helps with back up. I also brought in a gift shop
that carries breast-feeding supplies and nursing apparel, as well as
childrens wear. When I started I had envied a hospital in which I
visited trying to bring their success to mine several years ago. Their
lactation support services was staffed by a RN, RD's -2, and a teacher.
They all brought such uniqueness to their program. They accomplished
such good work and one of them I really feel was my mentor. I still call
on her when I need to brain storm with someone. Believe me you are now
my brainstormers. Well, in the budget cuts there lactation program sadly
was dropped. They were baby friendly and I envied them so. I thank God
every day that I can still practice in the way we are. It has been three
years four in Feb. I draw on the RD's of our hospital. They are greatful
for the learning experience I am bringing to them. I refer all out of my
scope of practice. I rely on my HCP's to support me. I feel that all
aspects of health care and counselors can contribute so much to
breast-feeding. I rely on my mom's to help each other. I have a monthly
support group and for those that need more often than that I ask that
they start one among themselves.
I ask the moms that wean their babies if they would continue to come to
offer the knowledge and experience they have to a new mom. I don't think
we can accomplish good things with nurse-ins, and criticism of our
profession I think we gain more by just doing good work.
Thanks for letting me belong in your group.
Terri Klein RN, CLE, CLC, working towards IBCLC
