I am looking for a collective reasoning on why would any of us recommend a
mother pump and dump her milk. I am not talking about the meds that are
totally contraindicated with breastfeeding. Truthfully, I am thinking about the
thread lately about mothers calling us for advise around the holidays and
drinking.
Maybe I am hanging myself out there but I am thinking "risk Vs benefit and
good parenting" when I give my advise.
If a mother is making the effort to ask the question and seek advice, then
she seems very eager to do the right thing for herself and her baby.
I feel our part should be good listeners, really hearing what they are
asking and having solid information to help make decisions.
Why are we lecturing the mothers who are breastfeeding, already giving their
babies the best in life, about all the things they should not do if
breastfeeding? So if a mother wants to have more than one drink during this time of
year is she putting her baby at risk when she is breastfeeding?
Now we are back to all the "rules" again with moms who are breastfeeding
verses the moms who are formula feeding. The formula feeding moms can drink,
smoke, diet, and sleep longer? Do we make any recommendations to mothers about
drinking if they are not breastfeeding? If not, why not?
I want all babies to get the best and I want to be able to really hear what
a mother is asking and help her chose the best answer without ever telling her
to pump and dump her milk.
