Theresa,
I think this mom is experiencing what I am experiencing with my third baby:
lots of milk - more so on the right side, gulping, not a great latch. Finn
is now 11 weeks old - he has days that he spits up more than others, he is
less gassy than a few weeks ago and my breasts are no longer sore -
something I could not see about 5 weeks ago. Many babies spit up - at a
wedding this weekend my brother, sister and I compared barfy baby stories.
I don't suggest pumping - just more work for mom, she can hand express a
bit, and take breaks during a feed. If she is sore she should work on a good
latch.
Something Finn has taught me - a mom can have good breastfeeding skills -
that does not mean the baby does or that the situation is ideal -i.e.
forceful letdown, tongue-tie (Finn had that too! Ouch! Clipped at 40 hours
old - thanks Dr. Schwimmer).
Remember, with time, persistance and a few skills, these things get better.
