In my experience in Puerto Rico, where, although the San Juan area was
usually fine (unless we had a hurricane), I lived the electricity was an "on
and off" proposition, I found it best to ask mothers if they had erratic
electrical service like me - if so, I recommended the Medela pedal (foot)
pump - I can't tell you the number of working moms and even some moms with
sick babies, or those who needed to increase their milk supply - who used it
very successfully. We even had teen-age brothers and fathers doing the foot
work! We found that the bag that was used to transport the large rental
pump could, with a little "finagling" accommodate the pedal and kit.
One dad was a goatherder and when I explained that their baby in NICU needed
mom's milk, and she needed to express at least 8 - 10 times a day, he said
"I can do it!" and offered to hand express his wife. The wife and he were
back the next day and took the pedal pump.
I get NO BENEFITS IN ANY WAY from Medela...just want to make sure that all
tools are considered when we are talking about pumping and increasing milk
production. Electricity is not a steady commodity in most of the places
housing those displaced by Katrina, and even when there is electricity - can
you find a place to pump that is relatively private? How many plugs are
available?
