i All,

Thank you to everyone who has chimed in on this issue. It seems to have
been a very popular thread! :-) Obviously, it's an issue we all encounter
quite often.

To Lee, who recently posted:

The baby was 7-7 at birth with *lowest* weight being 6-11. So the baby
lost exactly 10% of birth weight. My understanding, as you've stated, is
that 10% loss, while maybe a red flag to check breastfeeding management, is
not uncommon.

At 5 weeks, the baby was up to 7-14, which is 19 ounces from lowest weight,
thereby not *quite* 4 oz./week (if divided evenly). I believe that when we
are working so closely with ounces like this, it bears remembering that the
weight is checked on one scale in the hospital and another scale in ped's.
office Also, I asked mom if diaper was on or off during the different
weight checks and she said that it was on with one of the early ped. office
checks and then on again for the next check but baby had just peed
therefore a dry diaper had been put on.

I am in contact with this mom and she is supplementing by with ABM and
EBM. She is also do breast compressions to keep baby more interested while
on the breast, which, she states, seems to make a difference in his
sucking. There will be another weight check next week. I have offered
many of the suggestions you all volunteered such as supplementing
w/syringe/eyedropper/SNS.

Again, thank you for your inputs!
