I strongly believe that the first step is to get rid of the notion that
these are in any way "gifts"! They are advertising samples, nothing else.
By promoting the concept of a gift, patients are led to believe they are
somehow their "right". This is perpetuated by getting coupons in the hands
of expectant moms so they bring them to the hospital to ask for their gift
and are then a little miffed if they don't get it. (A technique that grows
as the number of hospitals opting out on playing the game increases.) After
all, the coupon says it's their right to get it (and don't we all like to
get something we perceive as free?) Nurses are put in the role as the
givers or refusers of these so called gifts and who wouldn't rather be
perceived as a giver rather than one who refuses to give a gift?
