Having worked with many adoptive mothers, including my own daughter, I
agree with Darillyn's suggestions. Most of my clients have not begun
inducing lactation before getting their babies.
Some of my clients who put a lot of emphasis on quantity of milk lose their
dedication if they see less milk than they expected. Then they have a
formula-in-a-bottle -feeding baby instead of the breastfed baby that they
had longed for.
The points that Darillyn gave in the preference of the Lact-Aid with
adoptive mothers are well stated. A mother can set up an entire day's
supply of supplement at one time and keep it in the refrigerator to quickly
retrieve and warm when it is time to feed.
My most recent case was such a delight. We talked at length about the
goal's being the experience of her baby feeding at her breast. She ordered
a Lact-Aid and worked diligently at helping her baby learn to latch with
the tube. She does take domperidone which she orders from New Zealand and
she takes More Milk Plus or More Milk Special Blend (with goat's rue). But
foremost she is *breastfeeding.* She never worries about how much milk she
has and she doesn't pump. She knows that she has some milk but
baby-at-breast is her measure of success. If she decides to stop the
supplements she will still treasure the experience that she is having and
not worry about amount of milk.
One of my suggestions that has helped with milk supply and with bonding is
LOTS of skin to skin time. Hormones are stimulated and so are love and
connection.
So if you can help her to see that breastfeeding is feeding at the breast,
and doing so will stimulate milk, any amount of which is phenomenal, then
she can experience that on-going joy that we all know about.
