I am searching for information about safety concerns/recommendations about
preparing human milk with the additive of human milk fortifier in a
NICU/SCN setting.

To prepare all the infant's feeds in our SCN, currently our hospital uses
the clean counter beside the main breastmilk refrigerator and adjoining
sink .

Is a laminar flow hood now being recommended? Our nurse manager is updating
our SCN policies and stated she thought JCAHO's recommendations were for
laminar flow only.

This is the information I've found on line so far....

http://www.adhb.govt.nz/newborn/Guidelines/Nutrition/HandlingFeeds.htm

These detailed 2003 "Guidelines for Preparation of Formula and Breastmilk
in the Health Care Setting" by the American Dietetic Association:
http://www.eatright.org/Public/NutritionInformation/92_17242.cfm

Canada's health professional advisory r/t powdered infant formula
preparations:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/food-aliment/mh-dm/mhe-
dme/e_enterobacter_sakazakii.html

Only the Canada site mentions in passing preparation under a laminar flow
hood.

How many NICU/SCN's are using Laminar flow hoods to add HMF to human milk?
Why and why not? Any suggestions or additionsl references for me?

Thank-you in advance for the help,
Rachel A. Miller RN, BSN, IBCLC
hospital based
