Dear Friends:
The manufacturer of Depo-Provera says that this medication should not be given to breastfeeding mothers until lactation is well-established, at 6 weeks postpartum.
Shabaan was the researcher who discovered that Depo was compatible with breastfeeding. "Early postpartum" in the Shabaan study was 8 weeks postpartum, for poor and rural Egyptian women who had no access to human milk substitutes and were culturally mandated to breastfeed.
There is a big difference between the abstract and the full study in this case.
