Hello to everyone following this thread...
I'm sorry if my post seemed solemn...
I really was chuckling...but the printed word doesn't convey that does
it?
I certainly didn't take an offense to Vicki's post...
I know we want to soften the blow for those moms who truly cannot make
enough milk,
and will need to supplement with an SNS, but I am wary of having OBs do
this during a prenatal...
For two reasons...one- even IBCLCs don't have a crystal ball and OBs
know even less than LCs in this regard...
two- want we might regard as preparation, a mother will regard as
prognostication, and viola
we will have created a self-fulfilling prophecy...
Take for instance the mom in Wilson-Clay and Hoover figure 173...this
is the mom during lactation...
Can you imagine what her breasts looked like prior to, and during
pregnancy?
Who would have predicted she could make eight ounces a day?
How many OBs examining a woman whose breasts fall out of the mainstream,
are going to take the attitude that "of course you can breastfeed",
even if it means getting a little help from an SNS?
In this vein I have a question...
What can we do for the mom who has no milk whatsoever in regard to
nipple comfort during nursing?
And what about uterine contractions and bleeding?
I'm finding with the moms with no milk at all, these problems really
limit how often they use an SNS as opposed to a bottle...
Interestingly the moms I've helped in this situation tell me they
eventually just comfort nurse without the SNS because the baby will
gladly take a bottle when he is hungry but a few times a day nothing
will do except the breast and those times he is not so much hungry
as just needing the breast...
