I heard Katherine Dettwyler give her "natural age of weaning" presentation a
few years ago at a LLL Area Conference in NJ. In that presentation she
mentioned the widely-cited statistic that the worldwide age of weaning is
4.2 years, and said she searched but found no research to support this. Does
anyone have a source of an accurate statistic? I believe Kathy also said
that such a statistic would be fairly meaningless, as so many babies are not
breastfed at all, and weaning age has so much cultural bias. I hope I am
quoting Kathy correctly.
Also, I'd like to (re)introduce myself. I was on this list for a while a
couple of years ago, but got overwhelmed with other things. I am now working
toward becoming IBCLC (hope to sit for the exam this summer; I've sent in my
application!). I've been a LLLL for five years, and have completed a
hospital internship in lactation. I'm already learning much from this group
(especially how much I still have to learn).
Finally, an apology for posting the "Ask Amy" article after it had already
been posted. I was in a hurry and behind on my emails . . .
