Hey Wise Ones,
The illness thing is something I can speak to directly. I am a serious
asthmatic and not only fear passing on any germs I might be carrying but fear the
germs indicative of hospital visits. My conclusion to this dilemma has been
to wear surgical grade masks for the last three years. I calmly enter the
hospital with the mask on, enter the mom's room, remove the mask at the door,
explain the situation and put my mask back. I have never had a mom who refuses
me entrance. Most are touched by my concern for the well being of themselves
and their babies and are appreciative of the fact that I am smart enough to
take care of myself. I will say that I have had the fun playing Zorro with one 3
year old nursling who was hospitalized and scared stiff and have played peek
with younger folk and 2 masks. I try to be creative and to ALWAYS make sure
that moms and babes can see me smiling with my eyes as well as my face. This
masking method has gotten me through 3 years of visits with no cross
contaminations. Now if I could only convince my teen not to bring home germs from
school I'd be healthy all winter! : ) Hope this helps.
I do understand that masking is rare in this country(USA) but is common in
most other countries. I bow to our European and Asian sisters and their superb
common sense.
Peace,
Maggie Payne
