I read this article and sent the following reply to Dr. Lee
Hi Dr. Lee,
I just read your article on spiked health.
It was so interesting to read. I am a breastfeeding mom and a lactation
consultant. I think what this study drives home is the fact that the health
care community waves the breastfeeding flag but often does not support
breastfeeding and often undermines it.
There are so many obstacles to breastfeeding - we ate often told - this is
the best way to go so get out there and do it. It reminds me of sports - it
can be hard or seemingly impossible - "here is a pair of roller skates - get
out there." Without ever having seen anyone roller-skate, lots of ads for
walking shoes, free pairs of walking shoes and no guidance. The roller rink
is filled with skaters joyfully gliding around and there you are holding on
for dear life with bloody knees. I too would feel inadequate.
Thank you for listening to these women - I hope you share this with the
health care world.
Leigh Anne O'Connor, IBCLC
