i must admit, that having read all that 1) you have all written and
2) some of the easily accessible research papers on line i am certain
i will be singing a different tune. i truly did not realise the
*seriousness* of the risk of death for tummy sleepers. and i stand
corrected.
having said that, i must say that i will certainly try to put this
new baby in his/her back to sleep but - call me anything you like -
if (s)he wakes up every single time i put him/her down to sleep (like
my first did), i will not be unwilling to try side or tummy sleep.
again, i understand the risks of tummy sleep as well as the benefits
to the bf pair with back sleep - but sometimes a mom's got to do what
a mom's got to do. i watched my girl like a hawk when she tummy
slept - i was constantly awake and checking her for signs of
breathing, so it's not like i was getting any *extra* sleep. she
still woke every 2 to 3 hours for well over a year to nurse even
though she was on her tummy.
you can't "watch out for danger" if you don't put your child in a
carseat. no one can see an accident coming. you see what i'm
saying? i understand what's being said about deliberately risking
your child's life by not doing the safe thing. but if you can
monitor a tummy sleeper, it's not the same as monitoring a mom
holding her baby or a toddler standing in the backseat.
but then, having said all *that* :) i will be very certain to tell
all my clients that back to sleep is the way to go. and advise them
of the serious risks they would be taking otherwise. but side-
sleeping? is the risk of SIDS the same as tummy-sleep? i'll have to
do more reading.
thanks to all you wise ones for opening my face-down eyes. :)
warmly,
cian sawyer, CLC
