The yogurt is a good idea, and with my son I used to mix it just with
baby fruit, (I didn't want to use that precious pumped milk for
cereal!) and he liked it like that.
And I agree, the cereal isn't necessary, and although I would worry
about salty foods, I wouldn't worry about seasoned or spicy foods, as
I've seen some babies from different cultures thrive on seasoned
flavorful food!
I guess I would ask what the mom means by salty and spicy foods. Is
it stuff she makes herself where a portion can be pulled out before
salting? Or are we talking highly processed convenience foods? That
might make a difference on what is reasonable for this mom...
