What does everyone use to treat MRSA mastitis or nipple infections? I have
not seen it yet, but anticipate that it is just around the corner!

On the med surg floor, I see TONS of MRSA unfortunately. Of course a
culture and sensitivity is run to find out exactly what the infection is
susceptible to, however, more than likely Vancomycin is more often than not the drug of
choice. According to Med. and Mother's Milk, is a L1 Drug. I haven't seen
any breast MRSA, but many people are colonized just in day to day living and
because they are generally healthy don't know it. When they become lowered
in their immune status (postnatal period can lower the immune system) the
infection can manifest in many areas, ie: lungs, urine, etc. I too would not be
surprised to eventually see MRSA attack the breast however, being the
"closed" system it is I find the breast to be an unlikely place to find it.

Is there a test on breast milk for MRSA? I am not aware of any, and will
ask at my hospital's lab to see if we can do it, or if it can be sent out to a
lab that can. I have not heard of any such thing, but would be VERY
interested to find out.
