Lara, while I can see how you got this impression from Winnie's post, I
would be really surprised if Winnie is actually "harrumphing" and giving
dirty looks to anyone -- openly or surreptitiously. She asked rhetorically
if she *should* do that, meaning (I take it) that of course she doesn't and
shouldn't, and that other people ought to extend that same courtesy to
breastfeeding mothers even if they're perturbed by them. She also said one
thing that bothers her when she sees bottle-feeding is the thought that
maybe the mother tried to nurse and didn't have good information or
support. So, one reason for her discomfort is that so often when a mother
is bottle-feeding, it's concrete evidence of societal failures -- a
reproach to all of us, and an unpleasant reminder that there's a long way
to go.
I daresay I shouldn't be speaking for Winnie, but I wanted to mention I
read this a bit differently.
