Nan

I have suffered from psoriasis since I was 8 years old. Being aware that
psoriasis can follow any cut/abrasion anywhere I was not surprised to
notice it on the areolas when I was breastfeeding. It was self-diagnosed,
since I recognized what it was, and took the form of reddened skin and
flaky patches, mostly on the areola, but more noticeable in the crease
where nipple joins areola. I self-treated with a cream I was using at the
time, I think hydrocortisone and coal tar. I expected the psoriasis to be
a *lot* worse than it ever was while breastfeeding my first baby for nearly
a year and twins for over four years. It came and it went, but generally
speaking the symptoms were very mild and I'm convinced that breastmilk
helped!

If I was to have that time again I would treat nipple psoriasis sparingly
with what a doctor in Harare prescribed for me several years later (I think
you know him Nan since his wife was a very prominent LLL Leader), and that
was 25% coal tar solution mixed in UEA. This smells pretty awful, but is
*so* effective. The nipples/areola would obviously need to be washed just
before the next breastfeed, but unless someone could prove to me that this
would be harmful for the baby, because of its effectiveness I would be very
keen to use this simple remedy.

Hope this helps.
